Ski tour to Schrötterhorn mountain

An excursion across Suldenferner glacier to the Schrötterhorn peak beneath the towering Königsspitze mountain.

General description

An excursion across Suldenferner glacier to the Schrötterhorn peak beneath the towering Königsspitze mountain.
This moderately difficult tour leads ski tourers up to a height of around 3,386 metres in approx. 2.5 hours. It is ideal for anyone hoping to experience Königsspitze mountain up close, with plenty to see and savour on the way to the Schrötterhorn peak.

Route description

The starting point of this moderately difficult ski tour is the Sulden/Solda cable car mountain station. Begin by crossing the gentle slope towards the Suldengletscher glacier, then head diagonally left up to the moraine. Once there, you should enter the large hollow that leads to the glacier. After crossing the hollow, bear diagonally left to reach the upper flat basin of the glacier. Then climb the steep right slope until you find yourself below the Suldenspitze peak. When your route crosses the trail leading to the Casatihütte mountain hut, at the same level as the ravine to the left, you should keep right and make your way onto the ridge. Starting from the ridge, head upwards for a short section until you reach the summit plateau on the right-hand side. You are now below and to the right of the east subpeak of the Schrötterhorn. Pass through a hollow to come to the ski depot at 3,350 m, then continue on to a small rise on your right. Head down into the ravine for a few short metres, then complete a steep ascent to the nearby highest point at 3,386 m.
Direct ascent:
If you prefer to embark on a direct ascent, start by entering the lower, large hollow of the glacier. Head up on the left of the hollow until you reach a height of 3,040 m, then continue diagonally left as far as the prominent icefall on more level terrain. At 3,150 m, you should navigate a small yet steep crossing up onto a ridge until you reach another section that is more level. From here, simply keep going straight up as far as the lower subpeak (3,280 m) to the east of the main summit. Then follow the normal route until you reach the highest peak at 3,386 m. (WB)
